Using a proper desk and a comfortable chair has had an unforeseen side effect: There is nothing physically distracting me from writing verbose, under-explained bitchy comments in response to random comments. I have become the word-bloated troll I have always, deep down, wanted to be.

So, uh, I'm thinking of getting back into writing stuff, mostly short stories, and I started wondering about wordcounts. Are there certain wordcounts that tend to show up more than others (i.e. are 4000, 5000 or 12 000 popular numbers?) or does it just end up where it ends up after editing?

In 1984 I was born, the son of a mother who had Cystic Fibrosis. I was the second child born to a person with CF in Canada.

Because of our healthcare system, I was not born into abject poverty or crushing personal debt. Because of our healthcare system, my mother's family did not have to put all their money into her medicine and equipment. Because of our healthcare system, she managed to live twelve more years after I was born. Because of our healthcare system, she was able to take a risk on lung transplant surgery. Because of our healthcare system, we were not destroyed by the cost of that surgery.

There are other things, things that were my own medical issues, things that also impacted my life. This, though, this is before all of that.

Because of our healthcare system, I am here.

If you benefited from government-run health care, why not share a story like this one? Pick what you feel comfortable talking about.

Copying your memories to a backup clone is a violation of that person's rights as an individual; imposing identity, personal and legal, without its consent. And even if you name that entity as your legal heir, your relatives would probably be able to contest the will.
